11:08, February 10, 2009

Tibet's imports and exports totaled 765 million U.S. dollars in 2008, a year-on-year increase of 94.5 percent, setting a new high in the last decade, according to the Lhasa customs office.

Export reached 707 million dollars, a 110% increase over 2007 and imports hit 58 million dollars, a decrease of 13 percent. As a result, trade surplus came to 649 million dollars.

The general-purpose trade has replaced border trade as the major trade mode in Tibet. In 2008, the general-purpose trade value amounted to 520 million dollars, up 260% over the previous year, making up 68 percent of total imports and exports.

The growth rate of the general-purpose trade has remained 100 percent since last August. Particularly in December, the general-purpose trade value reached 201 million dollars, 88 percent of total imports and exports that month.

The export volume of various kinds of textiles from foreign trade enterprises in Tibet rose to 301 million dollars, an increase of 74% over the previous year. The value of electromechanical products for export reached 153 million dollars with a year-on-year growth of 300 percent.

Local private enterprises exported and imported 433 million dollars worth of goods in 2008, far exceeding their state-owned counterparts' figure of 293 million dollars. Thus private enterprises became the leading trading entity for the first time in Tibet's foreign trade history.

In 2008, local enterprises not only declared goods at Lhasa customs, but also handled import-export business in 44 ports in China, with imports and exports handled there totaling 512 million dollars.
