Feature: My impression on Tibet

By Dechen Pemba, a Masters in Chinese Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London

I travelled to Lhasa from Beijing in January 2007 together with an American friend of mine. It was one of the most memorable trips I have ever been on.

I remember waking up on the train to Lhasa on the second day of the long journey and being astonished by the beautiful scenery! There was blue sky and dramatic landscape. As it was the winter, entire lakes were frozen and it just looked amazing, I had never seen anything like it.

In Lhasa the atmosphere was buzzing as the local people were preparing for Tibetan New Year. My friend and I spent the first couple of days getting used to the altitude so we walked around a lot and kept warm with lots of cups of sweet tea.

We were very good tourists and saw all the main sights, we first went to Jokhang Temple to see the precious Jo Rinpoche. We also visited the three great monasteries of Sera, Drepung and Ganden. There is so much to see and do in Tibet, we didn't have time to go everywhere we wanted. Next time I hope I can make it to Namtso lake but I will make sure it is summer when I go there!
