08:59, April 07, 2009

The Shangri-la Airport in Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, southwest China's Yunnan Province, is expected to open next month.

The extended airport will have an annual handling capacity of 1.2 million person-time passengers and 9,600 tons of cargo, according to the airport General Manager's Office Thursday.

The project, costing 370 million yuan, was launched in September 2007 and will be completed within this month.

The office said, the 10th anniversary of the airport will be celebrated in late May just after it is put into service.

Located in the central area of the world natural heritage "Three-River Parallel Flow," (The Yangtze, Yellow and Lancangjiang Rivers) Diqing attracts large numbers of tourists both from home and abroad for its unique natural scenery and ethnic folklore. By the end of 2008, it had received 3.63 million person-time tourists.

With the rising demand of the local tourist market, the annual handling capacity of the airport will have reached 2.4 million person-time passengers by 2035, the office said.
