Tibetologist: Living Buddha never elected in Tibetan history
13:10, April 14, 2009

Living Buddha has never been elected in the Tibetan history and such election doesn't follow the historical practice or religious rituals, according to Gar Dawa Tsering, associate researcher of the China Tibetology Research Center Monday.

On the 4th Session of the Tea Party held by China Journalists Association, Dawa pointed out that it is not in historical traditions or religious practices in the Tibetan Buddhism that Living Buddha is reincarnated into an adult or a foreigner, let alone when a living Buddha is still alive.

The reincarnation and confirmation of Living Buddha is a strict system involving a series of complete processes. There is no precedent in which a Living Buddha was reincarnated into a foreigner or when a living Buddha is still alive in the Gelug Sect, which has strictly kept to the religious taboos and historical practices from the beginning, Dawa said.

The prediction of the location of the reincarnated soul boy is just part of the search work.

Though some reincarnations of Tibetan Living Buddhas emerged in Mongolian-inhabited areas and Mongolian living Buddhas are reincarnated in Tibetan-inhabited areas, "yet the reincarnation into other ethnic groups or onto other areas has never occurred," he added.

Tenzin Chepa, former deputy secretary general of the center, indicated that the Tibetan Buddhism has become popular based on the support of the Tibetan people. Without popular support, how does Living Buddha come into being, he posed the question.
