How does U.S. president Barack Obama treat Dalai Lama's close-watched visit to the USA? The whole world is watching!
The Dalai Lama is seeking an audience with Obama in October and whether to be met by the U.S. president or not becomes a world focus.
Both George W. Bush's father and former president Bill Clinton met with the Dalai Lama in private, while the younger Bush met with him in a public ceremony. As every former meet with the Dalai Lama has infuriated China, it will be a delicate consideration for Obama to decide whether he will meet him or not, as during such a special period of financial crisis and economic recession, the USA needs China's supports more real than ever.
Since Obama took over the government, he always emphasizes good relations with China and both countries should continue promoting trade and economic cooperation.
Last week, Geithner, Treasury secretary, wrote on the report that US would not cite China as a country that manipulates its currency to gain unfair trade advantages. In February, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had a trip to Beijing and expressed that the US would not let its human rights concerns interfere with cooperation with China.
An expert, who served as President George Bush's senior Asia adviser, said Obama might be trying to play a lower profile role during this Dalai Lama's meeting.
Anyway all the three former presidents met with Dalai Lama unofficially, though they took differnt actions about Dalai's visiting.
