08:38, April 29, 2009

The Government of Nyingchi Prefecture in southeastern Tibet plans to provide safe drinking water for all residents in its rural and pastoral areas next year.

From 2000 to 2007, China's Central Government spent a total of 75.42 million yuan on the drinking water projects in the prefecture. As a result, 536 villages with 90,500 residents now have access to safe drinking water.

In 2008, the prefectural government earmarked 7.66 million yuan to solve the drinking water problem for 977 households in the countryside. By now, all the households have had access to tap water.

Meanwhile, the undertaking of drinking water projects in rural areas provided locals with new sources of incomes. In 2008 alone, residents in Nyingchi earned 10 million yuan more from building the projects and related facilities.
