2009 Shoton Festival to exchange mascots with World Expo
14:46, May 26, 2009

The 2009 Lhasa Shoton Festival will exchange mascots with the World Expo Shanghai during the traditional Tibetan festival from August 20 through 26.

June 30 in the Tibetan calendar marks Tibet's traditional Shoton Festival -- meaning sour milk or yogurt drinking festival in the Tibetan language.

It originated from the mid-11th century as a strictly religious festival. From the 17th century, the Shoton Festival began to evolve into an entertaining and religious event with Tibetan operas staged and Buddha paintings unfolded.

To better present Tibet's unique culture and its economic and social development over the past 50 years, the Lhasa City Government planed to hold Lhasa Beer Festival, Damxung Horse Racing Festival, International Halfway Marathon Tournament and Western City Mayors' Forum during the Shoton Festival.
