
Around 2011, the Tibet Museum of Natural Science, which is to start construction next year, is expected to finish construction in the east district in Lhasa, capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR).
The leading group for the museum's preparatory work revealed that the feasibility research report has been finished and the design blueprint is to call for public tender.
"At present, TAR is the only region without a science museum," said Du Enshe, head of TAR Agriculture & Husbandry Department. According to him, the Tibet Museum of Natural Science will boast the functions of a science and technology museum, a museum of natural history and an exhibition gallery: exhibition, training education, experimental education and the show of special effects of films and etc. The museum will play an important role in science popularization, art education, entertainment and tourism.
"We will try to make the museum a base for the local people especially juveniles to learn about science and a base for patriotic education as well as an attraction for tourists," Du said. "In Tibet there are many wonderful culture resources such as Thangka, plentiful natural resources such as animals and plants, and characteristic geological features and attractions. The museum will adopt the most advanced acoustooptic technology to show vivid images to visitors."
After construction, the Tibet Museum of Natural Science will display at least 200,000 kinds of samples of animals, plants and minerals. In addition, famous natural attractions in 7 prefectures of TAR will be made into miniature landscapes in the museum. The museum will become a window for visitors from home and abroad to know and experience Tibet.
