Xigaze Prefecture is a cradle of the Tibetan culture, with unique ethnic cultures and numerous cultural relics sites. Preliminary survey shows that Xigaze has 609 protected cultural relics sites, among which eight are at the national level, 26 at the regional level and 79 at the county level. In addition, there are 100,000 cultural relics in the collection of cultural institutions.

Last year, the inaugural ceremony was held for the protection projects of Tibet's priority cultural relics sites during the 11th Five-Year Plan period and the repair of Tashilhunpo Monastery.

Sub-projects to renovate the Byams-pa Hall of the Tashilhunpo Monastery and the stupa hall of the 4th Panchen Lama were launched earlier this year at a cost of 40 million yuan RMB. Meanwhile, repair and flood prevention projects for the Shalu Monastery were started with a total investment of eight million yuan RMB.

During 2006 to 2008, the Tibet Regional Government earmarked six million yuan RMB to revamp six cultural relics sites including the Pala Manor and Iwang Monastery. Besides, preliminary work has been under way to repair the Palkor Monastery, Langdong Manor, etc.
