China's central government enjoys wide public support in Tibet: official
09:46, June 23, 2009

China's central government enjoys wide public support in Tibet and people there also uphold the current regional autonomous policies, said a senior Tibetan official here Monday.

Tibet has been given various preferential policies from the central government since the democratic reform 50 years ago, Nyima Tsering, deputy director of the Standing Committee of Tibet Autonomous Region People's Congress, said in a discussion held in China Research Center of University of Technology Sydney.

The old Tibet, which was a society of feudal serfdom under theocracy, has been reshaped with success. Tibetans are now longing for social stability, richness and a well-off life, he said.

He said the reform had fueled Tibet's growth that registered many stunning figures including a consecutive seven-year double-digit growth rate of per capita income in the region.

Nyima Tsering said he, a native Tibetan, along with three other Tibetan delegates present in Monday's discussion, were witnesses, participants and beneficiaries of the successful democratic reform.

"What is most valuable is that Tibetans today enjoy more political rights, economical subsidies and freedom of religion," Nyima Tsering said.

On Monday, the Tibetan delegation met with the staff from the Sydney Morning Herald, a leading Australian newspaper.

The delegation is scheduled to leave for New Zealand on Friday.
