Tibet helps 1.25 million people lift out of poverty

Since 2001, 1.25 million rural people in the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) have passed "help line" (1,300 yuan of net income), the limit for the low-income people to receive the government's help. And about a million rural people have lived in comfortable houses.

In the past 8 years, various special measures have been taken in TAR to relieve the rural people's poverty. These achievements have improved the living conditions of rural people in remote areas and boosted the region's prosperity.

Up to 2008, the number of the people whose per capita net income is below 1300 yuan (they need help most in TAR) has dropped to 230,000 from 1.48 million and ratio of the total population in rural areas dropped to 10.5% from 67%. The number of people whose per capita income is less than 1,700 yuan has dropped to 680,000 from 964,000 in 2005 and the ratio of the total population in rural areas dropped to 30% from 42%.
