Tibet's Nyingchi gets Chinese govt's eco efficiency fund
16:14, June 29, 2009

The Chinese government has allocated an annual fund of 1.3 trillion yuan to the southeast Tibet's Nyingchi Prefecture, the home to 5,000 kinds of plants and 300 breeds of animals.

The fund, also known as ecological efficiency compensation, was made to protect Nyingchi's biological diversification and timber resources.

"We have signed 17,000 contracts with the prefectural farmers and herdsmen. They can receive an annual compensation of 1,000 yuan each person. Some of them may be compensated as much as 20,000 yuan," said Zhang Ming, director of the Nyingchi's Forestry Bureau.

According to some statistics, there are 5,000 kinds of plants and 300 breeds of animals found in this prefecture.

Nyingchi boasts the largest primitive forested land of nearly 250,000 hectares in China. The gross area of the prefectural natural reserves has risen to 3.2 million ha, 16 times more than in 1995, accounting for 42 percent of the Tibet's territory.

Chinese national natural reserves such as Brahmaputra Grand Canyon and Ciba Rare Animal and Plant Reserve of Zayul have also been established at the prefecture.

In 2008, Tibet launched a project to prevent and control desertification in its southeastern part, with 137,400 ha of desertified land treated and 74,000 ha of reclaimed land restored to forest.

By now, about 2.97 million ha of the forested area in Nyingchi has entered the system of ecological efficiency, making up 38.7 percent of the Tibet's land area.
