11:11, August 19, 2009

On August 17, Qinghai-Tibet Railway’s Naqu Logistics Center, a railway logistics center with the highest altitude in the world, was completed and put into service. It is predicted that the logistics center will be able to receive and deliver over 2.2 million tons of goods by 2015, and as much as 3.1 million tons of goods by 2020.

The completion and operation of the Naqu Logistics Center is an important milestone in the process of Tibet’s social and economic development. The center will play an important role in allowing the Qinghai-Tibet Railway to realize its transport potential, improving the economic structure of North Tibet, accelerating the progress of regional industrialization and urbanization, strengthening Tibet’s communication with external regions and its self development ability, while promoting the rapid and sound development of Tibet and North Tibet’s economy and society.

Naqu Logistics Center is located five kilometers south of the town of Naqu in the Tibet Autonomous Region, and has an altitude of 4,500 meters above sea level and its total investment exceeds 1.5 billion yuan. According to Wang Zhongyu, secretary of the Party Committee of Qinghai-Tibet Railway Company, relying on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, Naqu Logistics Center can be connected with Lhasa, and also have a profound influence in Qamdo, Ngari, North Shigatse and other regions. The center not only possesses essential logistic functions such as transportation, storage, loading and unloading, but also value-added logistics functions such as product processing and comprehensive services. It is China’s first-class comprehensive logistic center.

The logistics center is 7 kilometers long and 1.5 kilometers wide, and covers a total area of 8,000 mu. It has three zones including a bulk cargo logistics zone, a processing zone and a comprehensive logistics zone. “The three zones are connected by railways and a circular road. The circular road can cross the Qinghai-Tibet Railway and reach the bulk cargo logistics zone. After Qinghai-Tibet Railway trains enter the station, their cargo can be unloaded and loaded onto other trains, and then transported to the comprehensive logistics zone. Therefore, the transport here is quite convenient. There is also a train affair office, which is equivalent to a rescue base for the section of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway in Naqu,” said Lu Yongzhong, general manager of Qinghai-Tibet Railway Company.

Reporters learned that Lhasa will also build a 1,062 mu logistics park. After this is completed, the park and Naqu Logistics Center can join hands to complement each other, forming a win-win situation. The park will allow the Qinghai-Tibet Railway to promote Qinghai and Tibet’s social and economic development more effectively, become a modern comprehensive logistics center which can connect Tibet with the South Asian market and have a profound influence on the whole of Tibet.
