A ceremony was held in Gyantse County, Xigaze Prefecture, Tibet, on Tuesday to mark the start of the project to protect the Zongshan anti-British invasion historic site.

The ceremony also marked the beginning of the renovation projects for Tibet's priority cultural relics during China's 11th Five-Year Plan period (2006-2010).

The Zongshan Anti-British Invasion Historic Site, 307 km away from Lhasa, is where the Tibetan people fought bravely against British invading troops in 1904. It was designated by the State Council as one of the first batch of cultural relics sites under national protection in 1961.

Attending the ceremony were Cai Wu, Chinese minister of culture, Hao Peng, executive vice chairman of the Tibet Autonomous Regional Government, and Shan Jixiang, director of the State Administration of Cultural Relics.

Addressing the ceremony, Hao Peng said that the Central Government had allocated a special funding of 380 million yuan RMB (55.6 million U.S. dollars) to renovate the Potala Palace, Norbu Lingka and the Sakya Monastery. The renovation project has just been completed following seven years of work.

To protect Tibet's cultural and historic sites more effectively, the Central Government has decided to earmark 570 million yuan RMB (83.4 million dollars) to renovate another 22 cultural relics, including the Zongshan anti-British invasion historic site.
