94.7 per cent of forest resources in Tibet Autonomous Region has been put under effective preservation as a result of the state's compensation system for efforts made to achieve forest ecological efficiency.

China's central government spent a total of 15.5 billion yuan by five times to Tibet during 2004-2009 period as the fund to compensate for the forestry ecological efficiency, covering 63.87 million mu of forest.

Since Tibet was nominated as one of the regions to receive the compensation fund in 2004, the total welfare forests entitled for the compensation fund has risen to 151.7 million mu as yet.

The forest acreage under effective preservation takes up 94.7 per cent of the total forest resources in Tibet.

84,000 farmers and herders have found new jobs in forest protection and the annual income has hit 450 million yuan.

As one of the regions abundant in forest resources, the forest coverage in Tibet has risen to 11.31 percent, up 1.47 percent over the figure released in the fifth survey of forest resources in 2000.

With the compensation system, destructive lumbering of forests has put under control, realizing a balance between ecological protection and economic development.
