"I worked in Tibet more than 40 years ago, so I am now deeply attached to the plateau," said You Youzhong, a 78-year-old visiting an exhibition on the achievements made in China's five autonomous regions held in Beijing on Monday.

He was sketching a picture on the show, "running Tibetan antelopes", on a pad he brought along.

You once spent seven months in Tibet building the China-Nepal Highway. "I was greatly impressed by the snow-capped mountains, major rivers, grasslands, wildlife and hospitable people in Tibet. Now at the exhibition, the pictures and images of Tibet seem all so familiar to me, and the great changes that have taken place are so amazing," the senior said.

"See how robust the Tibetan antelopes are! I saw those smart animals on the grassland back 40 years ago. Now the environment in Tibet is under effective protection. Just then the lecturer told me that now nine national-level and eleven regional-level nature reserves have been set up in Tibet," said You, with great satisfaction.

You, a fan of art, was a member of the Chinese Artists Association. The subjects of his artistic creation are the picturesque landscapes of China and the rich and diverse lifestyles of its various ethnic groups. He had spent two years working on a painting depicting the local customs and practices of the 56 ethnic groups, with the theme of unity among various ethnic groups.

"I was praised for my work at the national meeting to commend and award units and individuals distinguished in this regard, and that is a great honor to me", You said with a proud face.

"Although I am getting on in years, I am still strong. With the completion of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, I really want to go to Lhasa by train and see for myself the new looks of Tibet!"
