Tibet uses solar insect killer lamps for pest control
10:10, September 23, 2009

Some 86 solar insect killer lamps have recently been put to use in the Yajiang Shelter Forest in Shannan Prefecture, southeastern Tibet.

It is the first time that solar energy has been applied in forest pest control.

The solar insect killer lamp is an advanced, environment-friendly technical product. It works like this: its solar panel collects the power for the lamp, which radiates light-waves and sends electric shocks to kill the pests.

With the support of the Tibet Autonomous Regional Science and Technology Commission, the first pilot project to use solar lamps to kill insects was launched in the Yajiang Shelter Forest in Shannan Prefecture, which is the area most severely harmed by insects. Now 86 lamps have been installed, and another 100 will have been used by the next February.

An official of the Forestry Bureau of Tibet Autonomous Region said that in the past chemicals were used for pest control, which not only pollutes the environment, but is also becoming increasingly ineffective in killing pests such as paleacrita vernata. Now with the application of solar insect killer lamps, things are beginning to change for the better.
