Dechen is the most eye-catching as the only female Tibetan artist at an exhibition of Chinese paintings on China's Tibet being held in Rome and Milan.
The exhibition opened in Rome on October 23 and in Milan on October 26, following the conclusion of a two-day forum on the development of China's Tibet.
The introverted and simple Tibetan woman has delicate inner feelings and strong social responsibility, which find expression in her paintings.
Dechen, 33, is free on her painting topics and she can draw everything that comes to her mind. As a woman, she has drawn a lot of paintings on female topics, and is working on a series named "half the sky" by collecting different and distinctive female characters together.

Chinese Tibetan artist Dechen attends the Chinese and Italian artists cultural exchange conference in Milan, Italy, Oct. 26, 2009. (Xinhua/Luo Huanhuan) Animals like snakes, birds and yaks are often seen in Dechen' works. She explained that since lots of animals are on the verge of extinction, she wants to enhance people's awareness of animal protection via her paintings.
Dechen has drawn a painting in which Mona Lisa is holding a yak calf in her hands. She said, "Mona Lisa herself is a popular element and it is terrific to take her as the spokeswoman for animal protection."
Born in Lhasa in 1976, Dechen is lucky enough to become a painter. She said that previously Tibetan girls had been forbidden from drawing paintings, but now a lot of girls in Tibet are learning drawing.
Before graduating from the Arts Department of Tibet University in 1999, Dechen had formed her own painting style. Her painting named My Sisters won a silver prize at China's Fifth Ethnic Hundred Flowers Award in 2001.
Dechen has attended art exhibitions held in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Nepal. This time, she is exceptionally happy about being in Italy, a "holy palace of arts" she has been longing for.
At the exhibition held in Rome, one of her works titled Holy Lake Phenomenon depicting Tibetan herders worshipping a holy lake is particularly popular among the visitors.
A girl from the Arts Department of University of Rome said that she liked Dechen's paintings very much and decided to analyze the characteristics of Oriental and Occidental painting arts in her thesis.
