Construction of a market in Lhasa for Chinese caterpillar fungus, a traditional medicine widely used as a tonic, will be completed soon, with 148 merchants planning to move in December.

Located in Lhasa's economic and technological development zone, the market covers an area of 2,800 sq m and a floor space of 5,600 sq m. With a total investment of 20 million yuan (2.93 million U.S. dollars), the market is the largest of its kind in southwestern China.

"Our purpose is to build the market into the biggest and the most professional one in southwestern China, as well as to include the most famous brands engaging in caterpillar fungus products in the region," said Zhaxi, assistant manager of the Tibet Meibang Caterpillar Fungi Product Co., Ltd.

The company, which undertook to build the market, will verify the 200 businesses that have applied for operation in the market and only those meeting required standards will obtain approval to be operational there.
Meanwhile, the market will announce standards for the quality of the fungi and set norms for trading related products, added Zhaxi. Thus, it will not only help crack down on shoddy products, but will also protect consumers' interests.

According to Zhaxi, the second phase of construction of the market will feature supporting and affiliated facilities, including the research center for Chinese caterpillar fungus and the quality inspection center.

After the new market opens, the former market, which was formed by dealers spontaneously, will be a part of the new market and run by the Lhasa City Management Center.
