Tibet's telecom sector grows 17.83% in Jan.-Aug. period

Tibet's telecommunication sector recorded a 17.83-percent increase in its revenue during the January-August period of 2009 from the same period last year, according to the China Telecom Tibet Branch.

During that period, the sector's earnings amounted to 1.32 billion yuan RMB (193 million U.S. dollars), with the growth rate much higher than the national average of 3.2 percent.

The added value of the sector reached 350 million yuan RMB (51.2 million dollars), 1.91 percent of the region's GDP.

The project to make telephones and optical cables accessible to every village and township is well underway and construction of the 3G network is going on smoothly and has already covered 72 counties and districts.

Since 2006, Tibet's telecommunication sector has been growing rapidly, with the average annual growth rate of its business development and turnover hitting 20 percent and 30 percent, respectively.
