Nyima Tsering, headmaster of the Haicheng Primary School in Chengguan District, Lhasa, capital of Tibet, has been pursuing the principle of "doing everything possible for children" for 30 years.

Opened on April 19, 1959, the school was Tibet's first private one after the democratic reform was launched in the same year.

With a joint investment of three million yuan RMB by the governments of Chengguan District and Beijing's Haidian District, the school was updated and renamed the Haicheng Primary School in 1997. Now, it has 25 classes with 1,300 pupils.

The 47-year-old headmaster has been dedicated to the educational cause for more than 30 years and has been conferred on many honors.

Lei Xiuying, head of the school's Office of Teaching Affairs, said, "As a member of the Communist Party of China, Nyima Tsering has always been strict with himself. His heroic acts in the March 14 Lhasa riot in 2008 fully show his noble morality."

On March 14, 2008, Nyima, together with other leaders of the school, stood fast at their posts for the whole day to make the teachers and pupils assured.

Nyima said, "I still feel scared when I recall what happened that day. Our school is a place to impart knowledge and educate people, and it is definitely inviolable. But what the rioters did that day was intolerable and unpardonable. In face of such an incident, I just performed my unshirkable duty and did what I ought to do."
