Since Nov. 1, 2009, Tibet has raised the standard of compulsory education eighth times. The grants for primary students increased from 1,300 yuan to 1,750 yuan per student each year, for junior high students grants increased from 1,450 yuan to 1,850 yuan per student each year, and an additional 100 yuan will be given to students who live in rural areas near the border. These grants all came from the financial budget of Tibet Autonomous Region.
Since 1985, the National government established special funds to support boarding schools for primary and junior high students in Tibet’s agricultural and pastoral areas. Meanwhile, the government has carried out the “Three Guarantees” policy, covering all the food costs, living and tuition fees for students who qualify for compulsory education.
