An investment totaling 2.7 billion yuan has been spent on China's largest eco-protection and construction project of the Sanjiangyuan area, according to Qinghai Provincial Government.

Known as "China's water tower," the Sanjiangyuan area at an altitude of 4,000 meters is the source of two of China's most important rivers, i.e., the Yangtze and Yellow, and an international river the Lancang, which winds through Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam before flowing into the South China Sea.

In a bid to make the Sanjiangyuan area true to its reputation -- "Ecological Paradise" and form a green belt on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the Central Government earmarked 7.5 billion yuan in 2005 to begin the project on the plateau in southern Qinghai Province, covering the Tibetan Autonomous Prefectures of Yushu, Huangnan and Guoluo.

The project involves three aspects, namely, eco-protection, infrastructure construction to benefit living and production of local farmers and herdsmen, and construction of eco-protection supporting facilities.

So far, 90 percent of the project has been finished and 2.7 billion yuan invested.

Thanks to the project, the environment around Sanjiangyuan area has greatly improved. Maduo County in Guoluo, an example of the improvement, has restored its original beautiful landscape once dotted by numerous sparkling lakes.
