Peng Xiaoyun began to appraise jewelry for his friends in 1996. "At that time, the jewelry market in Lhasa was not fully developed. Once in a while some of my friends would come to me to ask me to appraise their jewelry," said Peng.

Later on, as more people asked him to appraise their treasure, Peng became well known among his friends as a jewelry appraiser. He did the part-time job till 2001. By then, he had been doing jewelry appraisal for 13 years.

"To appraise jewelry can be easy or difficult," said the jewelry expert. It is easy because the jewelry is, in fact, just some beautiful stone and it is his major in college to appraise stones.

However, to examine stones one needs a profound professional knowledge. For average citizens, the knowledge is not easy to master.

In 2002, Peng obtained the certificate for national jewelry appraiser and became a professional in the field. Also that year he joined related departments in Lhasa in appraising the so-called diamonds from Russia and Australia in the Lhasa jewelry market.
