Hydropower station in Qinghai's Tibetan area operates for 22 years

The Longyang Gorge Hydropower Station in Qinghai Province's Tibetan-inhabited area has generated 90 billion kw of electricity since it went into operation in 1987.

The station, located on the border of Gonghe County and Guinan County, Hainan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, northwest China's Qinghai Province, lies at an altitude of 2,700 m and its dam is 178 meters high.

As a leading station on the upper reaches of the Yellow River, the station's reservoir covers an area of 383 sq km, and the station has a reservoir storage capacity of 27.4 billion cubic meters.

The station has withstood the test of many natural disasters like floods and earthquakes in the past 22 years.

Wang Huaibin, a leading official of the station, said that the station has four hydraulic generators with a total installed capacity of 1.28 million kw, and generates six billion kw of electricity per year.

He added that the station has also performs the function of flood prevention, irrigation and ice prevention for the lower reaches of the Yellow River.

The station can save an equivalent of 2.14 million tons of standard coal per year.
