Tibet's capital of Lhasa sent 47,939 farmers and herders to work in other parts of China in the first nine months of 2009, according to the Lhasa Office of Rural Laborer Transfer.

Accounting for one third of Lhasa's rural laborers, these workers brought back a total income of 272 million yuan RMB (39.82 million U.S. dollars), or 80.2 percent of this year's target.

The per-capita income of these farmers and herders has increased by 5,664 yuan RMB (829 dollars) so far this year.

Lhasa set the target at the beginning of 2009 to earn 339 million yuan RMB (49.63 million dollars) from sending rural laborers to work elsewhere, up 15 percent year on year.
