Tibet to aid 80 needy college students
09:44, November 27, 2009

A total of 80 university students and 100 middle school students from needy families in Tibet will receive aid from the "Aiding students in China's west project," according to the Culture Office of Tibet Autonomous Region.

Each college student will be granted 20,000 yuan (2,928 U.S.dollars) during their four years' study.

The project began in 2000 to aid needy high school graduates who are enrolled at key universities across the country but who could not afford tuition fees.

In 2002, the Central Culture Office decided to aid poor students from Lhasa Junior Middle School and the No. 1 Junior Middle School in southwestern Tibet's Xigaze Prefecture. Those who are enrolled at key senior middle schools will be subsidised with 9,000 yuan over three years.

According to a leading official of Tibet's Culture Office, the Central Government has allocated 17.9 million yuan since it implemented the policy nine years ago and a total of 580 needy college students have received the subsidies.
