80 percent pastoral areas use iodized salt

Up to Oct, a new breakthrough has been made in the promotion of iodized salt with over 80 percent pastoral areas completed the tasks, sources from Department of Commerce of the Tibet autonomous region.

At the same time, with the system of related salt administration being improved, series of preferential policies have been provided for local farmers and herdsmen. Every year, 30 million yuan is allocated as the salt subsidy for herdsmen. The price of iodized salt drops from 1.5 yuan to 0.5 yuan per kilogram, and the annual salt consumption for per person is 5.5 kilograms.

In 2008, 66 percent of pastoral areas used iodized salt. However, in 2009, iodized salt coverage rate in pastoral areas hits 80% with completing task two months ahead.
