Construction of the school buildings of the High-level Tibetan Buddhism College of China started in Beijing on Monday.

The buildings, which are expected to be completed in two years, will cover an area of 18,447 sq m. With buildings for administration, teaching and dormitories, the new school will be able to accommodate 200 students.

Addressing the corner-stone laying ceremony for the project, Huang Yuejin, deputy head of the United Front Work Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said that the college should seize the opportunity to build itself into a base for training Tibetan Buddhist scholars, promoting Buddhist theory research and enhancing international exchanges.

The college, set up in 1987, is a comprehensive school for promoting Buddhism. It focuses on the teaching of Buddhism and has unique Tibetan Buddhism characteristics.

The students of the college are mostly Living Buddhas from China's Tibet Autonomous Region, Qinghai, Sichuan, Gansu and Yunnan provinces, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
