Sanjiangyuan's grassland area increases by 0.48% annually
11:21, December 16, 2009

The grassland acreage in the Sanjiangyuan area, northwest China's Qinghai Province, has been growing at an annual average rate of 0.48 percent since 2003, with 53,329 sq km added this year alone.

Known as the "water tower of China", the area at an altitude of 4,000 meters, is the source of three major Chinese rivers, i.e., the Yangtze, Yellow and Lancang rivers.

Data from the Qinghai Provincial Meteorological Bureau show that during the 2003-2009 period, the grassland area with a high and medium vegetation coverage rate in the area increased year by year, while the grassland area with a low vegetation coverage rate decreased.

The grassland area with a high and medium vegetation coverage rate shot up by 36,131 sq km and 16,134 sq km over the average figure between 2003 and 2008, while the grassland area with a low vegetation coverage rate dropped by 16,885 sq km.

The grass in Qinghai's grazing areas grew well this year as a result of higher temperatures and more precipitation.

Data show that the grass started turning green in April and withered in late September.
