Tibet bans smoking in public places

Tibet Autonomous Region is going to prohibit people from smoking in public places from January 1st, 2010.

The "Enforcement Rules of Patriotic Public Health Regulations in Lhasa" has passed the approval of the Standing Committee of Lhasa People's Government and will put into effect on January 1st, 2010.

Since January 1st, smoking will be not allowed in the following ten public places in Lhasa: entertainment and cultural places, gymnasium, library, archives reading room, exhibition hall, assembly room, marketplace (includes indoor markets), station (shop) of food supply, financial business center.

The Rules also prohibits Lhasa citizens from smoking while taking bus, in bus waiting room, airport lounge, units of medical treatment, school, kindergarten, child-care centre and other places with a ban on smoking.

The Rules requires units concerned to put no smoking sign in the striking place to remind people and ashtray and something of the kind should be removed.

People will be fined with a penalty ranging from 20 to 50 yuan once breaking the rules to smoke in public places.
