Tibet has been one of the best regions in China and even in the world in terms of ecological environment protection following 10 years of developing China's west regions, a senior government official said.

Tibet has made remarkable achievements in environmental protection, with the fine-air days accounting for 99 percent of a whole year, said Qiangba Puncog, chairman of the Tibet Autonomous Regional Government.

"Tibet, regarded as the third pole of the Earth and water tower in Asia, serves as the regulator of world weather. We've become keenly aware of Tibet's significant role, also its vulnerable ecological environment," Qiangba Puncog said, "The central government has spent 6.7 billion yuan on our region's environmental protection in last few years."

Tibetans from all walks of life are becoming aware of the importance of ecologial environment, and this is a responsible attitude toward the nation and world, he added.

Tibet has carried out strict assessments of the environmental impact before starting a project, especially for construction of hydropower stations, infrastructure and mines.

On the one hand, the regional government has made great efforts to protect the region's lakes, wetlands and forests. On the other hand, the central government has decided to earmark an annual funding of 760 million yuan to protect Tibet's forests and provide subsidies for the protection of its grasslands in five pilot counties.

Tibet has also spent 1.5 billion yuan turning some grazing land into grasslands, which is a major measure to sustain the grasslands.

"Protecting Tibet's crystal-clear rivers and blue sky is a major task for the regional government and we will continue our efforts to protect the ecologial environment," Qiangba Puncog emphasized.
