The largest ecological construction project in western Xigaze Prefecture, southwestern Tibet, will be undertaken later this year, according to the Tibet Autonomous Regional Forestry Bureau.

The project, with an investment of 100 million yuan RMB (14.6 million U.S. dollars), is designed to afforest 13,333 ha of land along the No.318 National Route from the western suburbs of Xigaze City to Sakya County.

According to the plan, all the sapling holes will be dug before early February.

Upon completion, the project will be conducive to local economic and social development and a higher income of local Tibetan farmers and herders, as well as effective in water conservation, wind prevention and air purification.

The local forestry bureau has made sufficient pre-phase preparations for the project, such as inviting technicians and experts to conduct field surveys, receiving 2.5 million yuan (366,000 dollars) RMB from the local government as pre-phase funding, and purchasing machines and equipment.
