Tibet receives 81,000 tourists during Tibetan New Year holiday
11:06, February 21, 2010

Tibet received 81,000 tourists during the Spring Festival and Tibetan New Year holidays, up 4.6 percent year on year, according to the Tibet Autonomous Regional Tourism Bureau.

Meanwhile, the region earned 55.79 million yuan RMB from its tourism industry, 5.8 percent higher than in the same period of last year.

Yang Lele, a tourist from southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, spent the Tibetan New Year in a Tibetan villager's house in Lhasa, capital of Tibet, on February 14, the Tibetan New Year's Day.

The householder also taught Yang and other tourists how to ladle out buttered tea.

On the same day, more than 200 domestic and foreign tourists went into Tibetan residents' homes, tasting traditional Tibetan foods and appreciating Tibetan customs.

Since this year's Spring Festival and the Tibetan New Year fell on the same day, Tibet's tourism departments played a "folk customs" card to attract tourists.

For instance, the Tibet Regional Tourism Bureau and the Tea-Horse Road Travel Agency launched a program to invite 2,010 tourists around the world to enjoy the New Year spree on the plateau.

Dorlma, director of the travel agency, said that about 2,000 tourists have signed up for the activity, including 421 from the United States, Japan, Singapore and other countries and regions.
