Foreign media focus on 11th Panchen Lama's new position
09:36, March 04, 2010

The 11th Panchen Lama, Bainqen Erdini Qoigyijabu, one of the two most senior living Buddhas in Tibetan Buddhism, became a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), which arose many foreign media’s attentions.

New York Times issued an article quoted the statement of Bkra-lo, a Tibetan scholar at the state-run Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing. He said there was nothing surprising about Gyaltsen Norbu's appointment to the advisory conference. "He has a lot of influence and popularity among the Tibetan people, so it makes sense," he said. "Although he is very young, he is also very learned."

Meanwhile the Indian media gave related comment, "The times of Indian" published an article on March 1st. It said "In his new role, the 23-year old Panchen Lama may be expected to take on the Dalai Lama and help the government counter the adverse publicity on the Tibet issue. He has so far refrained from any direct attack on the elderly Dalai Lama. But this might happen now because most members of the parliament denounce the Dalai Lama on a routine basis."
