The rainfall in the Sanjiangyuan area, the hinterland of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, has continued rising in recent years, with the amount of 577 mm in 2009 close to the record high in 1989.

Known as the "water tower of China", the Sanjiangyuan area in northwest China's Qinghai Province is the source of the Yangtze, Yellow and Lancang rivers.

Thanks to the higher rainfall, desertification there has been effectively curbed and the ecosystem of local grasslands has been restored with increasingly higher grass coverage and production.

Meanwhile, lakes that dried up for 20 years in the Yellow River headwater have been refilled with water. The Mardo County is known again as the "home to lakes" in the area.

The abundant water amount has also guaranteed the development of agriculture and electric power generation on the lower reaches of Sanjiangyuan.
