The market value of a Tibetan mastiff named "red lion" has topped 10 million yuan (1.47 million U.S. dollars) after it won the grand champion of a mastiff exhibition held in Chengdu recently.

"I bought it at 480,000 yuan in 2009 when it was half a year old. My dog is a pure Tibetan mastiff, with its family tree confirmed by the authorities. Strong and majestic, it was spotlit among China's 200 top mastiffs taking part in the preliminary contest," said He Yinping, the dog's owner who lives in Lhasa.

"Red lion," male, eats one kg of fresh beef and other quality food every day as it is in the growth period, He noted.

He said that 200,000 yuan is charged now for a successful breeding with his mastiff.

The Tibetan mastiff was originally found in the southern Himalayas. Those dogs from Tibet's Himalayan river valleys are considered the earliest ancestors of modern Tibetan mastiffs.

There are no more than 200 best pure mastiffs in the world, with fewer than 20 in Tibet.
