Qinghai-Tibet railway to link with southern Xinjiang
15:55, July 06, 2010

Ministry of Railways plans to build a railroad between Golmud of northwest China's Qinghai Province and Kuerle of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The preparatory public bidding for investigation and design had been initiated. The new line will link the Qinghai-Tibet railway with the southern Xinjiang railway so as to make it a significant part of northwest China’s core transportation network, source from Development and Reform Commission of Qinghai Province.

The planned railway will start from the city of Golmud passing Kunlun Mountains and the southern frontier of Qaidam Basin, Qinghai province, crossing over Altun Mountains to Hongliu Valley, Milan, Ruoqiang into Tarim Basin, Xinjiang, and finally extend to Kuerle. The entire line runs a total of 1,240 kilometers, of which 540 kilometers lie within Qinghai Province.

Initiation of the public bidding for investigation and design marked the beginning of the second railroad to Geku railway that connects Qinghai and Xinjiang. This project will be a crucial supplement to the construction of transportation network in northwest China, a further promotion of resource development in Qaidam Basin and Tarim Basin, and a new driver for regional economic development and unity of various ethnic groups.
