Onshore ports promote further opening-up in Tibet
16:44, July 06, 2010

The onshore port economy of Tibet Autonomous Region has achieved initial development along with the growth of border trade and mutual market trade between border inhabitants, and onshore ports have become one of major pillars for Tibet to further open-up, develop foreign trade, and implement the strategy of vitalizing border areas, and enriching residents' livelihoods, said Solange Dorje, secretary of the Party at the Commerce Department of Tibetan Autonomous Regional Government, according to Tibet Daily.

Dorje said that Tibet is home to five onshore ports opening to the outside world that are located in Shigatse, Ngari and Shannan prefectures. During the "11th Five-Year Plan" period, the ports in Tibet have maintained a sound development with the volume of passengers and goods in and out of the ports growing steadily. In 2009, passengers in and out Tibet's ports, including border inhabitants, numbered around 1.6 million, up by more than 33 percent from 2006 during the early "11th Five-Year Plan" period. The trade value of the ports stood at 280 million U.S. dollars, up by 35 percent from 2006.
