14:24, August 02, 2010

Now the local residents of Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) take iodized salt every day up to the national standard, so people do not have to worry about lack of iodine in their diets, said the Salt Company of TAR.

Iodine deficiency disorders (IDD), a kind of epidemic disease can jeopardize people's health. For example, serious iodine deficiency during pregnancy can result in stillbirth, spontaneous abortion, or infants' congenital abnormalities.

As an area with high incidentce of IDD in China, TAR has been vigorously promoting iodized salt coverage with the full support from China's central government. Since 2009, the local government of TAR has provided an annual subsidy of 30 million yuan to encourage the local farmers and hersmen to buy iodized salt at a lower price of 0.5 yuan/kg compared with 1.5 yuan/kg previously.

Up to date, residents of 90 percent of the urban areas in Lhasa, capital city of TAR have got access to iodized salt given by the iodized salt distribution center, according to the Municipal Salt Bureau of Lhasa.
