10:07, August 12, 2010

Lhasa, capital city of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) will strive to upgrade itself into an international tourist city with both world-class reputation and quality service in five years, according to the organization committee of the "China Mayor's Forum on Tourism-Lhasa 2010".

"It's an inevitable choice to develop Lhasa into an international tourist city with Tibetan features," said Cao Bianjiang, executive deputy mayor of Lhasa.

The "Action Plan for Building Lhasa into an International Tourist City in Five Years" has been completed to detail and quantify the development objectives, according to Cao.

With Lhasa listed as one of China's 14 ancient historical cities approved by the State Council, the Fifth National Conference on Tibetan Work which was held earlier this year further urged to build Tibet into an "important international tourist destination."

"Tourism has become one of the pillar industries of Lhasa in its leap-forward development. In 2009, the city hosted 3.2 million tourists from home and abroad with the total tourist revenue hitting 280 million yuan.

As the capital city as well as the cultural and religious center of TAR, Lhasa is now enjoying a good opportunity to make further progress
