Netizens select best cities to take refuge

Lhasa,Tibet.

Netizens are debating the place to seek refuge in the event of a catastrophic natural disaster. Zhengzhou, Lanzhou and Lhasa cities have made the list.

The Hollywood blockbuster "2012," based on the ancient Mayan belief that the year would see a series of world-changing cataclysmic events, have made many Chinese question where they would take refuge in the event of a fatal disaster.

Netizens have placed three main criteria for potential candidates. The place cannot be on a seismic belt. It cannot have had a major geological disaster in the last 50 to 100 years, and its altitude should be more than 500 meters above sea level.

So far, they have named places such as Zhengzhou, Lanzhou and Lhasa as the safest cities.

"Zhengzhou should be the safest city," wrote one netizen in an online forum. "It is in the central plains of China and not on the seismic belt."

Though Zhengzhou is located on a fault zone, where the Earth's crust has separated because of tectonic forces, "it is an inactive zone," said an official at the Seismological Bureau of Henan Province, where Zhengzhou is located. This means an earthquake is unlikely to happen there.
