Commendation ceremony held for Zhouqu rescuers
10:59, December 20, 2010

A ceremony has been held to thank the workers who took part in the rescue operations in Zhouqu County in northwest China's Gansu province.

Those involved in the rescue operations were presented with plaques and gave speeches at the ceremony. Massive rain-triggered mudslides hit Zhouqu on August 8th this year, killing at least 14 hundred people and leaving almost 300 others missing. Rescue teams from across the country converged on the scene to help in any way they could.

In guidelines issued by China's State Council, funds for the area's reconstruction will come mainly from the central government. Priority will be given to rebuild damaged homes, public services, infrastructure and to prevent the spread of disease.
