January 26, 2012 was December 3, 2011 on the Tibetan calendar and January 3, 2011 on the Shigatse's rural calendar.

According to the local customs, rural Tibetans put up colorful sutra streamers on roofs and mountain tops, by the riverside, in Land Deity Temples, etc. and presented Chemar, a specialty for Tibetan New Year to the local god of the land that day.

All the Tibetans of the village got together to drink highland barley wine and buttered tea as well as singing and dancing to pray for favorable weather and have a bumper harvest in the new year.
