
The Tibetan ethnic group has created rich and characteristic cultural forms during the exchange and integration with other ethnic groups, making its culture a shining pearl of China.
The excellent ethnic culture, including language, religion, traditional Tibetan medicine, architecture and performing art, comes into being after a long historical course and becomes a key constituent part in the national culture of China as well as precious treasure of the world.
It is also a valuable resource, meeting the increasing cultural need of the local people and providing a great platform for the development of Tibetan cultural industry.
The government has pumped large amount of investment in the protection and maintenance of cultural relics with high historical, cultural and artistic value since the beginning of the 11th Five-Year period (2005-2010).
It has invested 380 million yuan in the maintenance project for Potala Palace, Norbu Lingka Park and Sakya Monastery. The project is the one with most investment, largest scale, most complicated construction and highest technology in the history of Tibetan cultural protection.
The government started the repair work for another 22 cultural relics including Tashilhunpo Monastery, Drepung Monastery and Jokhang Temple with 570-million investment soon after the project of the three major cultural relics was finished in August of 2009.
Tibet has also launched a project of "cultural development and prosperity" to promote the inheritance and protection of Tibetan culture.
Through the project, Tibet will cultivate cultural talents with great financial input, develop non-profit cultural undertakings and build quality cultural products and characteristic cultural industry in a move to make the plateau region "an important place with characteristic culture in China".

Perched on top of Hongshan Mountain in the center of Lhasa, Potala Palace was first built in 641 by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo to greet his bride Princess Wencheng of the Tang Dynasty (618-907).
