The Potala Palace, which stands 117 meters high atop the Red Hill in Lhasa, was built in 1,300 years ago in the 7th century. It is a traditional Tibetan architecture and is the highest ancient palace in the world, reaching more than 3,700 meters above the sea level. In 1961, the State Council of China made the Potala Palace one of the major cultural relics subject to state protection. In 1994, it was added to the UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
