The Potala Palace [Photo/Tibet.cn]


The Potala Palace, which stands 117 meters high atop the Red Hill in Lhasa, was built in 1,300 years ago in the 7th century. It is a traditional Tibetan architecture and is the highest ancient palace in the world, reaching more than 3,700 meters above the sea level. In 1961, the State Council of China made the Potala Palace one of the major cultural relics subject to state protection. In 1994, it was added to the UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

Perched on top of Hongshan Mountain in the center of Lhasa, Potala Palace was first built in 641 by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo to greet his bride Princess Wencheng of the Tang Dynasty (618-907). It then became the chief residence of the Dalai Lama after it was reconstructed by the Fifth Dalai Lama between 1645 and 1693.
