Tibet is expecting 20mln annual tourists in five years, a new target based on the 10mln tourist number in 2012, according to the information released from the ongoing first session of the annual two sessions (Tibet People's Congress and Tibet People's Political Consultative Conference) held in Lhasa on Jan. 24, 2013.

Padma Choling, chairman of Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR), announced this goal in his government work report.

The government work also revealed that tourist number to Tibet hitted a record high of over 11 mln, generating 13.2 bln yuan (about 2.1 bln USD) tourist revenue in 2012.

"Based on a scientific study on the tourist statistics, we decide that‘improving the quality and efficiency’is the future developing strategy," said the government officials.

Tibet’s tourism has a huge market potential. Over 70 percent tourists express their willingness of revisiting Tibet, according to source.

Progress has been made in terms of scaled development, brand building, market expending and credit constructing.

But further efforts are still needed in terms of building infrastructure, improving reception capacity and systemizing marketing.

However, the future is bright and is in accordance with the principle of "building Tibet in to a world tourist destination" issued at the 5th National Conference on Tibetan Work.

Specific goals were put forward to market the "Miracle Tibet on world Roof" brand and to strive for receiving 12.6 mln international and domestic tourists in 2013.
