An investment of 2.6 billion yuan ( about 430 million U.S. dollars) will be allocated to achieve full electricity coverage in the rural areas of Chamdo Prefecture in Tibet Autonomous Region during the 12th Five-year Plan period (2011-2015), according to the Water Resources Bureau of Chamdo Prefecture on May 23, 2013.

During the 12th Five-Year Plan period, 4.8 billion yuan (about 800 million U.S. dollars) will be invested in the livelihood construction in the Chamdo Prefecture, including 2.6 billion yuan ( about 430 million U.S. dollars) on building13 hydropower stations and renovating electric transmission lines to resolve the problem of energy supply, according to an official from Water Resources Bureau of Chamdo Prefecture, who added that all residents in the rural areas of Chamdo Prefecture are expected to get access to electricity by the end of 2015.

Located in the eastern part of Tibet, the Chamdo Prefecture is rich in water resources with many rivers running across. Among all the rivers, Jinsha River, Lantsang River and Nu River are three trunk streams with water resource reserve up to 40,468 mega, which accounts for 30% of total water resource reserve in Tibet.

However, there is no large hydropower station of the three trunk streams. The county hydropower stations in Chamdo Prefecture cannot meet the electricity demand especially in the dry seasons.

It is reported that the electricity provided for residents in the Chamdo Prefecture is generated mainly by hydropower stations and solar energy.

By the end of 2012, there were 99 hydropower stations and 89 photovoltaic power stations in the Chamdo Prefecture, according to statistics.
