Also Party secretary of the Tibet Autonomous Region Zhang Qingli said, "Developing tourism is an important power source for Tibet's overall development, open-up policy and social harmony."
Tibet's tourism industry sees burgeoning development
During the 11th Five-Year Plan period (2006-2010), Tibet's tourism industry maintains a great leap-forward development current.
The region received a total of 20.88 million domestic and foreign tourists and achieved total tourism revenue of 22.18 billion yuan, increased by 25.5% and 28.2% annually on average. In 2010 Tibet received 6.5 million domestic and foreign tourists, 3.6 times that of 2005.
The tourism industry plays an important role in promoting employment and stimulating economic growth.
Up to 2009, a total of 28,000 local people have been engaged in tourism business directly with other 142,000 people indirectly involved.
Also tourism economic scale has been formed in Tibet, with 18 region-level scenic spots, 102 travel agencies, and fixed assets worth up to over 5 billion yuan.
Tourism infrastructure has improved gradually, thanks to the opening of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway and the airports in Nyingchi, Nagri, Shigatse.
Tibet sets up tourist image as as "Roof of the world"
Leveraging on its natural and human landscape, Tibet is dedicated to building up its inimitable tourist brand featuring "mountains, snowy plateau, sunshine, as well as Tibetan culture".
Development of various tourist attractions such as the canyon scenery, lake and grassland natural landscapes, hot springs, folk customs gardens and series of cultural tourism products makes Tibet more eye-catching than ever.
