Religions remain healthy in China, says Panchen Lama
16:08, March 30, 2009

More than 1,000 Buddhists, academics and social elites from nearly 50 countries and regions listened to a speech by the 11th Panchen Lama on Saturday at the second World Buddhist Forum in Wuxi, Jiangsu province.

It is the second time that the Panchen Lama has attended the World Buddhist Forum, after he appeared in 2006 at the first, held in Hangzhou and Zhoushan of Zhejiang Province.

"This forum is convened in my country - China - which has a Buddhist cultural tradition going back 2,000 years," he said in English.

"This event fully demonstrates that today's China enjoys social harmony, stability and religious freedom. It also shows China is a nation that safeguards and promotes world peace."

Sakya Palden Dhonyu, abbot of the Sakya Monastery in Shigatse and a member of the second World Buddhist Forum, said he had listened to the Panchen Lama's speeches in Tibetan and Chinese several times, but this was the first time he heard him speak in English.

"Addressing an international audience, he made a very good speech in English, which clearly interpreted the core spirit of Buddhism," he said. After two days in Wuxi, the forum will move on to Taipei today and conclude on April 1.
